Planning your vacation and searching for the best Riviera Maya tours? Visiting ancient Maya cities is one of the most enriching experiences you can have — and the best part is, several of them can be explored in a single day.
Here are the top four ruins you can visit on a day trip from the Riviera Maya: Chichén Itzá, Cobá, Ek Balam, and Tulum. Which one is best? Well… it depends on what you’re looking for. Let’s break it down.
How much time do you have?
History lovers
Spend two days exploring all four sites. It’s worth waking up early to enjoy them peacefully.
Short on time?
You can visit Chichén Itzá, Cobá and Tulum in one day with an organized tour.
Curious explorers
If you’re not too deep into archaeology, visiting two sites in one day might be enough.
Choose Cobá if you love nature and quiet. Choose Chichén Itzá if you want to see the iconic highlights.
Just want the photo?
Then Chichén Itzá is a must. Snap your pic in front of the Kukulkán Pyramid and enjoy the moment.
📍 Distance & Access
Chichén Itzá and Ek Balam are farther inland. Often visited together.
Tulum and Cobá are closer to the coast and often combined in one day.
Tulum can be visited in a half-day tour — it’s only 50 minutes from Playa del Carmen.
🕗 Sites are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry around 3:30 or 4:15 p.m.
How crowded are they?
From most to least visited: Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Cobá, Ek Balam.
- Chichén Itzá: Extremely popular. Get there at opening time to avoid the crowds and the heat.
- Cobá: Much larger and less congested. Great for relaxed exploring.
- Tulum: Very touristy and compact. Early hours help avoid the rush.
- Ek Balam: The least visited — a peaceful and intimate experience.

Por qué vale la pena ver cada una de ellas
Chichen Itza.
Famous for the Kukulkán Pyramid and the Great Ball Court. A major postclassic city full of symbolism and cosmology.
Downside: no climbing allowed, lots of tourists and vendors.

Cobá.
Immersed in jungle paths and nature. You can bike or take a pedicab, and you can climb the Nohoc Mul pyramid — the tallest around.
Cobá was a major classic-period city, twice the size of Chichén.

Tulum.
More about beauty than grandeur. Perched above the turquoise Caribbean, it’s one of the most scenic sites in Mexico.
It was a postclassic trade hub, and a perfect short visit (under 1 hour).

Ek Balam.
The hidden gem. Visit the tomb of Ukit Kan Lek Tok with beautifully preserved stucco inside the main pyramid. Some stelae are in excellent condition.
Can be easily combined with Chichén Itzá in our Riviera Maya tours.
