A Bit of History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tulum was inhabited during the Postclassic period (roughly 1000 A.D. until the arrival of the Spanish). Unlike Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1 or Cob\u00e1, it didn\u2019t exist during the Classic era, so you won\u2019t find towering pyramids here. But don\u2019t be disappointed\u2014Tulum offers other things that make it absolutely worth visiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was likely a major trading port. Set right on the coast, the ocean views are stunning. Sunset is a favorite time for photographers, when golden light floods the ruins. Wildlife lovers will also enjoy spotting the many chubby iguanas basking on the stones\u2014just don\u2019t feed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Architecture by the Sea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tulum\u2019s buildings belong to the \u201cEastern Coastal\u201d style: flat roofs, inverted-V shaped walls, and carvings of the descending god. You\u2019ll notice how different it is from inland cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The archaeological zone is easily accessible, just minutes from Tulum town and under an hour from Playa del Carmen. If you\u2019re returning from a visit to Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1 or Cob\u00e1, it\u2019s a natural place to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the site is small and walkable, it\u2019s a good option for families or those who prefer a shorter visit. There\u2019s even a small train that takes you from the parking area to the entrance\u2014perfect if you want to save energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just one caveat: there\u2019s little shade<\/strong>. Bring a hat, sunglasses, water, and biodegradable sunscreen. If you\u2019re heat-sensitive, the early morning hours are your best bet.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The Rediscovery of Tulum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tulum was still inhabited when the Spanish arrived. Explorer Juan de Grijalva mentioned a populated Mayan city as he sailed past its coast. Later, during Francisco de Montejo\u2019s conquest, the city appeared in records under the name Sa\u2019ma\u2019<\/strong> (\u201cwaters of the dawn\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, the city was abandoned. In 1843, explorers Stephens and Catherwood published Incidents of Travel in Yucat\u00e1n<\/em>, referring to it as \u201cTulum.\u201d The jungle had already reclaimed the ruins\u2014but not their story.<\/p>\n<\/div>
